Biography
Description

The following summary was taken in whole from V·Max volume 2, issue 1. It is not perfect but it gives you a fairly accurate description of Kurama.

Kurama, aka Shuichi Minami* (Human age 16, Real age over 400 years old*...)
Be Bop Bishonen, He's no lady.

Kurama is a reincarnated Youko (Fox Spirit). As a youko, Kurama was an accomplished thief. Fleeing to the human world to recover from injuries, he was reborn as a human child. Given the name Shuichi Minami, he retains many of his Youko powers and reverts to his true form in extreme life-threatening situations (like the final battles of the Ankoku Bujutsukai)*. Growing up as a human, he has developed an attachment to his human mother. He crosses paths with Yusuke while trying to save her from a life-threatening illness. He possesses a kind and gentle nature until annoyed or threatened. His even disposition serves as an anchor for the team of "Netherworld Investigators" made up of himself, Yusuke, Kuwabara and Hieh. His main weapon is a "Rose Whip." He also has command over plant life and uses plants in creative, deadly and decorative ways.

* = corrections by Miko:
1) Most common spelling is Shuuichi Minamino. 2) Many people believe Kurama is over 700 years old. 3) At the Ankoku Bujutsukai (Dark Tournament), Kurama was not able to transform into Youko Kurama of his own free will.

My Own Comments Re: Kurama

As Shuuichi Minamino, Kurama has long red hair and green eyes. He is very attached to his human mother Shiori, and has a stepbrother (also named Shuuichi!) and a stepfather named Kazuya. He is polite and courteous and yet strangely distant as well, but his feminine looks often get people around him confused (he was once referred to as Kuwabara's girlfriend). He is one of the best students at his school, since he retained all the knowledge he had as a youko, and has a special interest in biology. His youko side allows him to control plants and utilize his favorite weapon, the Rose Whip. Kurama is the most intelligent of the four main characters and the most cautious. He is generally even-tempered, unless his family is threatened.

As Youko Kurama, Kurama has silver hair and gold eyes, along with a silver tail/tails and fox ears. My god, he's absolutely breathtaking to look at!! Kurama is taller as a youko (estimated to be around 7 feet tall or more) and has a deeper voice, but is far more cold and uncaring. He was once one of the most famous thieves in all the Makai (spirit world) until he was severly wounded by a hunter and hid himself in a human body in the Ningenkai (human realm). Youko Kurama's other form is that of a full kitsune (fox), with somewhere from five to nine tails and a silver coat.

Kurama first meets Yusuke when he steals the Mirror of Darkness. He tells Yusuke that he will return the mirror to him if he meets him at the hospital. When Yusuke shows up, he finds out that Kurama intends to use the mirror to save Shiori at the cost of his own life, after which Yusuke can have the mirror back. Yusuke is struck by Kurama's dedication to his mother and offers his life energy to the mirror as well, and since the mirror cannot chose between the two, it spares them both and also cures Kurama's mother. Afterwards, Kurama tries to repay Yusuke by saving him during Yusuke's encounter with Hiei, and then joins Yusuke, Kuwabara and Hiei later on as punishment for his crime.

Many years and adventures later (i.e. end of story), Kurama has come to terms with both his youkai (demon) and human lives, and he chooses the life of Shuuichi over Youko. After parting ways with former cohort/rival Yomi, Kurama chooses to remain in the Ningenkai and work in his step father's shop instead of joining the rat race in the Makai to become one of the rulers.

The Shonen-Ai Controversy

One of the oldest and still most popular shonen-ai pairings is Kurama and Hiei. Officially, no, there is nothing between them. But ask any rabid fan like me and I can see nothing but affection in every word and touch. Kurama and Hiei are my favorite couple in the entire series. I like the pairing of friends (and Kurama and Hiei seem to get along swimmingly) and at the same time, the pairing of opposities (personality-wise). Judging by the amount of fanfics and doujinshi I've read, I think there's a lot of people out there who would agree with me and want to see them together as a couple.

And yes, I do know about Kurama's supposed "girlfriend" Maya, but from what I can tell they were just classmates when Kurama was young, and we don't see her again after that!
